She was the best thing at this year's Photo Expo. At the Nikon booth she swished and twirled, around and around, undoubtedly bored out of her mind but I couldn't get enough. Part of the magic of silk is the way it floats and this was magical

The Red Ladies

My Dreams are Made of This!

One is spotted on a rooftop, red silk head scarf, dark glasses, black trench coat, more appear on the street, red stiletto heels and bags, disrupting traffic. More appear from black limos, beginning to take to take over the Square moving with military precision until finally they are shoulder to shoulder having commandeered the Square. Who are these women? Where to they come from? Where will they be spotted next? What do they want?

REVELATION!!!

After years of  pondering, what makes that scarf wearing woman stand out special, it came to me that the scarf in the only fashion accessory that requires personal action and attention.

Every other accessory is "ready to go", shoes are slipped on, handbags over the shoulder, sunglasses, ear rings require nothing but being worn as they are.

But a scarf isn't "ready to go, a scarf cannot just be worn because to do so requires action on the wearer's part,  the scarf must be opened, folded, styled, tied, adjusted.

The scarf's lack of structure affords the multiple fashion possibilities. A scarf is the most individualized of all accessories, open to the wearer's creativity and style and the woman willing to explore the scarf with confidence and grace stands out, powerful, not to be intimidated by 36" of silk and here we recognize her strength.

Where Are All the Scarfs or Scarves?

Mending from surgery, I have been able to spend a day prowling the web in search of the Absolute, Quintessential Scarf site/blog so I could swipe the brilliance for here and be spared the writing. I came across a posting from Echo Scarfs on why they were Scarfs, not Scarves. It's all about history. But as a kid, this was really a serious distinction to be made. I used scarfs for the longest time before bowing to contemporary usage of scarves. Sorry Edgar and Theresa, Echo's 1923 founders.

In my
58 or so years of scarf gathering, collecting, appropriating, rescuing hundreds of scarves, I have found only two in the same pattern, both with different colorways. Trolling through the vast richness of flickr, I have never seen a scarf I have owned. How many scarves are there out there? Where are they? Unlike coin, stamp or Collectible Spoons from Ike's era, there are no guides to scarf collecting. I thrifted a Vera the other day without a clue as to how many patterns and colors were issued in that series. Not like baseball cards, I'll trade you a Duke Snider for Stan Musial

Bio

Richard Volcane came into being as a self protective nom d’ bondage. Over the years, he has evolved into just what the other partner wanted and needed. There are as many Richard Volcane’s out there as there are corespondents and playmates. To some, he lives a life of James Bond globe-trotting glamour, to others, he is The Master, the guru from whom great knowledge and wisdom flows. Or the hot, cool photographer who always has 5-6 bound beauties mmmmmphing around his downtown loft. O’ the fantasy, the fantasy!

A deep, dark secret, I think I became a photographer so I could take bondage photos. My first experiments with a camera, did I photograph the dog, friends, the house, the car? No, I took self-portraits of my scarfed self reflected in the mirror. The processed prints were innocently intercepted by my father. While I died any number of a thousand deaths as he opened the envelope, to my unimagined relief, they were so terrible as to be unrecognizable both in person and location. ‘Boy, does this person have a lot to learn,’ he said. Boy, did I ever! ..... how to be even more devious, sneaky, and hide things better, drag my blanket, cover tracks.

Even as a child, cowboys and Indians age, (5-6-7?) I had accumulated a significant collections of bandannas, soft, soft, well worn, too many, more than any other kid on the block and that this was somehow wrong, not normal, something to be hidden. No idea where they came from, how I got them (or where they went).

Of all the influences of one encounters in growing up, the sense of hiding this dark secret - scarves, lingerie and bondage - that this secret, this compulsion was sick, perverted, terrible and wrong and, therefore, I was sick, perverted, terrible and wrong, was all pervasive. I look back on the years of lies, stories, deceit, abuse, manipulations, denials, guilt, fear, self-loathing with wonder that I have survived to today.

The point is that the journey from there to mature ‘adult’hood, has been an arduous one. There is, hopefully, an open honesty now, a directness of communication. There is little tolerance for game playing, being used, outside of mutually discussed/agreed upon scene boundaries/limits. There is a desire to be with people who understand, are non-judgmental, intelligent, playful, inventive, imaginative, you know, just your everyday super person.

For years, one role of Richard Volcane was to be a guide, a teacher, a support group of one to scarf bondagers. While I will never pass up the opportunity to get up on my soap box and proselytize, it’s time someone else took up the cause. I want to be with giving, caring, people, sharing what we love and love to do, in person or cyberspace.

So, the curtain is open, hard to ignore the man so used to pulling all the strings. We’ll take questions, general, personal, make believe...........

Oh, yes
